Every Thursday afternoon at Bel Ombre, a group of students gathers for Scott Club – a space where practical skills meet hands-on learning. This week, on October 30th, the focus was fruit salad preparation.
Working as a Team
Kitchen activities naturally require coordination. Someone washes fruit while another prepares the cutting board. One person cuts while another collects the pieces in a bowl. The rhythm of working together develops organically when there’s a shared goal and limited space.
The Practical Benefits
Beyond the immediate task, fruit salad preparation teaches several useful skills. Measuring and portioning connect to math concepts. Understanding which fruits complement each other involves taste and texture awareness. Following a sequence of steps builds organizational thinking.
Students also gain confidence in the kitchen, which translates to independence at home. A child who can safely prepare a simple dish is developing self-sufficiency that serves them well beyond school years.
Why Scott Club Matters
Thursday afternoons with Scott Club aren’t about producing perfect fruit salads. They’re about creating opportunities for students to develop practical competencies in a supportive environment. Each session focuses on different life skills, from cooking to crafts to basic household tasks.
What’s Next
The Scott Club schedule continues to rotate through various practical activities throughout the term. Each session introduces new skills or reinforces existing ones, always with an emphasis on hands-on learning and real-world application.
